"Past tense – Future, 1979 – 2040" by Nobuyoshi Araki

Comprising approximately 6,000 works, this series spans the period from 1979 to 2040—the year Araki will turn 100. The images were created by manipulating the camera’s date-setting function, which imprints a timestamp on the lower edge of each photographic print. Presented in chronological order, the works form a diary-like installation.

Araki has long been fascinated by the effect of exhibiting vast numbers of images simultaneously, and this project continues that exploration. By including not only the past but also an imagined future, the diary transcends linear time, offering a deeply personal glimpse into the artist’s inner world. Each image reflects aspects of Araki’s emotional landscape, contributing to a singular and immersive visual universe.

In this series, Araki continues to push the boundaries of photography, creating work that expresses raw emotion while also addressing personal memories, including reflections on the recent Great East Japan Earthquake.
