"Okinawa Portraits 2012 - 1016" by Ryuichi Ishikawa

Ishikawa’s portraits document a wide spectrum of Okinawan residents, reflecting the island’s complex social fabric and its transformation over time. Through these images, Ishikawa explores themes of identity, societal change, and the coexistence of tradition and modernity. The accompanying text, written by Ishikawa, reflects on the dramatic shifts in Okinawan life-urban development, changing fashions, and the loss of traditional spaces-and the enduring spirit of its people: 

“Changes of city increases speed rapidly as time progress. 30 years after I am born have changed many things of this island. … Although it is not having restricted to this island, this island has traced the very distorted history different from other areas. … Social weakness and instinctive power which feels sad with loneliness, simultaneously is there of living. The ovalness and beauty. That inconsistency that everyone has overflow on this island. I respect people of this island.”
