Following her debut photobook “Rie”, which concerned itself with acts of revealing, oflaying bare, in “Yuka & The Forest” German-born artist Lena C. Emery constructs a poetic short-story between her protagonist Yuka and the “sacred forest.” The pages alternate with portrait shots of her model and scenes of rural Japanese villages and deep forests.
“A carpet of rising pines lies tranquil atop the rolling hills. I step over an uprooted sugi and softly whisper: ‘Old pine’, pressing my cheek firmly onto its moss-covered trunk, ‘may you have had a long journey of life and may the kodama continue to live on in all that is around you…’”
The book includes a photographic color print.
